Viewers often ask me how I print cases for my projects. In this video I will show you how you can print your own boxes with a simple and free of charge method based on what I call a “Configurable Base Box.”

As usual, we will focus on how you can get the things done. It will not at all be a CAD tool training video.

In this video we will:
– Find the information to install Fusion360 and get a free of charge license for Makers
– Use my adjustable “base box” as a head-start
– Adjust this box to the right size and add some holes for power, LEDs, or other stuff
– I will also show you a trick on how I create perfect 3D printed holes
– and how I attach PCBs like an Arduino inside the box

  1. I am using FreeCAD and created a universal box as well. FreeCAD, like Fusion 360 has a possibility to enter the parameters in a spreadsheet so, like you show in your video, changing the size is very easy as well. Also not using screws, just tightly fitting lids

  2. Double sided tape? That is cheating. I need to cheat, too. It’s so hard to line up he screw posts just right on boards. I had actually given up on making enclosures because I have been having so much trouble getting the size just right. I was actually planning in my head how to use standoffs and then use a caliper to accurately measure the distance between them.

But, double sided tape, or foam, if the board has some components there, perfect! Thank you!

  3. Speaking of storing the mcu, I was thinking of epoxying it. Has anyone done anything like that and did the electronics work fine after?

  4. Great video!. but with all the due respect, where is the damn configurable base box?
hahhahaha. Ich folge deine Kanal seit Jahren, sehr gutes Kontent

  5. Beginner question but how do I delete for example both holes on the bottom sketch? I get an error "The profile reference is lost". Sure the extrude feature is missing the profiles now so is there a way to disable the extrude feature for this sketch? Many thanks for your reply, Vy 73 from Austria

  6. @Andreas Spiess Why Knob in Top part has fixed height 6mm but grove for it (Extrude3) has calculated height shell*2?

  7. Well, this video aged like milk given today's Autodesk changes to Fusion 360. This is why proprietary software has no place in open source labs.

  8. EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED! THANKS ANDREAS!! 😀
Edit: I like that you number your videos to find them easily!! 😀

  9. What 3D printer are you using? And how do i print smooth surface using 3D printer? I need super smooth enclosure for my project

  10. Sir Andreas, I used your template box and made a device of my own, if it's alright can you check what I did and tell me if it's good before 3d printing it. In our country, 3d printing is costly so I'm playing it safe.

  11. thanks for the tutorial. somehow when im creating my box whenever I delete the holes and then finish sketch it appears again. can you please help
