Here is a little electronic ignition that I made for a rotovator that has a dud magneto. it is based on the wiring diagram for the TIM 4 (I said TIM6 in the video in error) Which is a 12v adaptation of this jerry howell ignition: http://www.model-engine-plans.com/partskits/ignitionsystems/transistors.htm. I have not soldered a circuit board before so I found it a good task to learn on. it uses a TIP 42C transistor, a 2N 2907 transistor and a 3144 Hall effect sensor. All of these parts are available on Amazon, see links below. I used a standard 12v lucas ignition coil and a standard Lucas 12 v battery. This system will replace the points condenser ignition system in the Lucas SR1 Magneto that this engine had originally.   3. Does the coil get hot with the system on and not cycling? A timer that shuts down the saturation of the coil while not pulsing would be optimal.

  5. Old school can ignition coils typically have the + always connected to the battery (through a fuse of course) and the negative side is switched.

  6. Spark duration is the most important part to an ignition system. Your engine on its design and tune like air fuel ration will depict the spark duration and not all engines are equal. The original Atom company that was selling these stopped for this reason. You can make sparks all you want but if that spark isn't the proper duration then it's going to run the engine with a loss in performance and there will be extreme wear and tear.

  7. is that resistor connected to the small 2N2907 low power transistor need to be 5 watts? because if i build that in actual and that big size 5 watts resistor is used and i will enclosed the finished product inside the distributor housing then its very tight in there.
    I was wondering because 2n2907 is It is a 0.6-ampere, 60-volt, 400-milliwatt transistor and i wonder why 5 watts resistor was placed. Thank u.

  8. hello in my circuit the 2 transistors and the resistance of the Led are getting too hot. ??? because if I have the same components as the diagram. ???? without coil they heat the same just a little less

  10. This schematic simply doesn't work, all you'll get is smoke and and a burnt out out TIP transistor. The fact that the model works just tells you the schematic and model are different. Find another, don't waste your time and components on this one.

  11. I built this circuit foR use on a motoRbike, it didn't work, just burnt out the power lead from the battery. I must have checked the circuit a dozen times, still no luck, just burns out the power lead from the battery. Interestingly, when I connect everything up and just scratch the power lead the spark plug fires. Didn't work for me, I'll search for another diagram.

  13. Can we use 100ohm 1/4w resistor istead of 1/8w because in my city 100ohm 1/8w reisitor isn't available. Also, 200ohm resistor isn't available. Can I use 2 100ohm 1/4w resistor in parallel for 200ohm 1/4w resistor.

  14. Thats very interesting, would you expect this system to survive the temperatures/rigors of a motorcycle magneto, I have a few old trail bikes with dilapidated points ignition that I would like to try this on.
