Ambient information displays allow a home automation system to provide you with subtle feedback embedded within your environment. Concealing RGB LEDs behind a wall tile allows them to display status information when they are turned on, but still be totally invisible when turned off.

  1. Btw, do you use some custom firmware on that esp or some standard ones like tasmota/firmata/etc?

  2. I know it's 2 years now but maybe it will be helpful for newcomers. At 5:40 (and other parts of the presentation) you mention about spot lights not being diffused enough for the whole tile. There are asymmetrical diffusers to address such issues. Search for "lenticular light diffuser" or "elliptical diffusers" – those can have even up to 0.3 x 60 diffuse strength so extreme diffusion in one axis and almost none in perpendicular one. Cheers.

  3. Nice use of tile. I just happen to be building one that indicates the status of my train line, outside temp, inside temp, and oddly, my outside freezer. The freezer requires regular defrosting (it's old) and I have figured a temperature trend pattern as it ices up. An algorithm tracks the temp and flags performance via status LED when I should defrost.

  4. Off hand I can think of several uses:

    Dishwasher status, clean or dirty

Calendar event today, true or false

Trash and recycling is of course the one you came up with

Stove/Oven, on or off and preheated or not

  5. I know this is an older video, but I am creating an "orb" with a small white frosted globe (yet to be sourced), with an RGB LED inside driven by ESP8266 using messages from MQTT.  It will sit near the front door and glow softly to indicate the temperature outside.  Greens if it will be comfortable in normal street clothes, blues for cold, yellows for warm (short sleeves and shorts [I am in the Arizona desert], progressing to Orange, then Red if it is over 105 F or so…  I'm considering adding "lightning flashes" occasionally to indicate a forecast for storms.  I have a ton of data from the DarkSky API already coming into NodeRED every 10 minutes.  Thankfully, these are ideas you can implement in your tile display, despite the fact that you installed it now 5 years ago.  Software is an awesome thing 🙂

  6. you could have an led that showed if there is one on the toilet or if you have locked the front door when you go to bed.

  7. Is that connector you're using on the cable similar to a computer fan connector ? What do you call them ? Great idea for electronic projects ! Cheers Jon

  8. Very glad I stumbled across this channel, just the right level of technical detail for my understanding, good work! 🙂

  9. Your confidence in the life expectancy of the LEDS an not need to replace them amazes me. Nice project though!

  10. I notice you input 12v there, does the Wemos take 12v OK or are you reducing the voltage? Nice idea by the way, so what if you don't have a use for them. Thats usually where it starts 🙂

  11. Very cool idea. I'm definitely including this to my soon to start kitchen remodel. I love software/home automation, my job is a software architect and my hobby is DIY – so this is a perfect geek project:)

I envisage some kind of ascii character display using a number of LEDs.

    Great video as always

  12. So great to see you back, I absolutely love your videos and they are always amazing and you are a great inspiration. Please continue with #15 and onward. 🙂

Just realized, you didn't mention the readings you got off the sensor, did it work as expected?

  13. got the link to your video from adafruit blog. really enjoyed it and the persistence to finish the project over 4 years. I'll go back and watch the rest of your channel.

  14. Yes! An other video! I love your setup and it's inspires me! Hope you will continue and restart to do videos!

  15. Aaaaw! You make this awesome new video that we've been waiting for, and you haven't decided what to use the leds for! Oh well, a future video for that as well =D More to look forward to =D

  16. forgot about this channel, used to really enjoy it. I'm the same, so many projects half done around my house for years now 🙂

  17. They make LEDs that have the addressable PWM chip inside already, that would have made it even more compact. If someone is doing this on "thinset" mortar, the smaller the package the better.

  18. WOW! Great to see a new video.
I really enjoyed your videos in the past.
I hope that one day you will make some more if you have the time.
    Hopefully using the ESP8266 family.

    Thank!

  19. Nice to see a new video! and wow 4 year update! But very interesting approach to this.
