An introduction to motor types, power, and references to how to wire, speed control, and use all the common types of motors with a focus on reusing motors salvaged from appliances and other sources. Steppers, BLDC, PMDC, single and three phase, universal motors, and more

FAQ from the comments

1. What do you do with all the motors?
You might be new here, but nearly every project on my channel has an electric motor in it. I love making things that move. Also I create teaching videos (like the one you just watched), so I am looking to collect as many different motor types as I can find, then create videos about how they work and how to use them. Check out bonus 2 from the references above.

2. Can you make a generator/windmill/ etc with these motors?
Check out my series on the generator project. You will learn a great deal there.

3. Which motors can you use in a go kart?

I have a series of videos about my electric go kart.

Technical corrections
Nothing yet.

Final Note:
PLEASE UNDERSTAND…I receive hundreds of messages on all platforms (email, Facebook, comments etc) asking for advice, and help with projects. At this volume, I simply can’t do one on one advice.

  1. Smart man, well spoken, info per minute rate ( IPM) is great! THIS is a YouTube, Best Use: shared Experience. Thank You. Subscribed!

  2. Such good informations!
I don't know if this was covered in one of your video before, but I've always wondered how electric motor fails and of it's possibles to repair them.

  3. Replacing a diesel to electric motor? Diesel now 2,2 litres, 33KW, torque 110 NM at 2500 rpm. (Boat engine BMW D50)). Can somebody give approx numbers for electric motor with same "power". And if possible: to drive the boat in one hour at 2500 rpm, how big battery baggage do I have to have (lead or "18650" batteries? Thank you in advance for replies. (Boat speed is fast with only 1000 rpm…about 6 knots and top speed 13,5 knots 3200 rpm) By the way: Excellent video.

  4. Another good source for used electric motors is metal scrap yards. They get a lot of them, and most yards are more than happy to sell them at or near scrap value, because it saves them the hassle of having to tear the motor apart to separate the copper from the steel.

  5. Variable Frequency Drives do not change electricity to 3 phase. You can do the same thing with relays.

  6. I enjoy watching your channel. Very informative.
If you ever come to the Midwest, I'll buy you a coffee, or whatever.
    Thanks
    Tom

  7. hi my name is Mario and i want to know how you fix a three face industrial motor

  8. Listen to this man. Best info I have found on the internet. I have been a millwright for 30 years ( college degree ) and this fellow is the real deal. Never stop learning. Thank you MR Fielding.

  9. Nice job. I've subscribed and will search some of your previous videos. I'm building a magneto test bench and want a variable speed motor to turn 1000, 2000, and 3000 RPMs, as well as down to 200-300 RPM. Keep up the good work.

  10. This guy is more of a professor. He more than understands this stuff. I must enroll in his YouTube Engineering Classes. Just completed the first lesson.

  11. Hello Jeremy! Thank you so much for the videos man. This is the 2nd time you have been an amazing source of info regarding my projects.
My question is: I have a gasoline generator inverter (Honda EU2000i 240V 50-60Hrz European model). What electric motor should I use in order to(if feasible) to power a mid-size ATV and effectively turn it into a hybrid(Where Generator provides electricity to a an electric motor for actual mechanical power). Also I read that there is a way to bypass the pure sinewave inverter and use the output from the alternator from the generator and use a monophase motor but I just cannot find the info I need :(. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you again!
