I test several motor types to demonstrate which can be used in a Go Kart, electric bike/vehicle application. I show a Washing machine motor, Treadmill motor, scooter and others…

Notes
1. First video reference to a car starter… (not a recommended motor type. They are designed to run at max for 10-30 seconds not extended periods of time)
2. Second video reference to car alternator
A very well presented Project, but as mentioned above, car alternators aren’t designed to be loaded in reverse like that for extended periods of time.
3. The inverter shown is rated at 6000 watts peak, and 3000 continuous according to the paper work. However, this could easily mean 1500 watts per plug. So my first impression in the video is likely wrong.
4. In the US Washing machine motors are usually induction motors, but in other countries they are often universal motors.
5. The Tesla uses a custom three phase AC motor. This type of system cost thousands of dollars to have the right motor, controller, and battery bank to match. There is a reason the Tesla cost so much. This I think is way outside the scope of a backyard go kart project. If you have the budget you can certainly use a AC motor designed for this application. I was focused on Household recycled AC motors when making this video.
6. “Brushless” DC motors are often called AC motors and that is completely appropriate. They are very similar to 3 phase AC motors except the way they are controlled is different. This topic was not covered in this video as I was primarily focused on the question of salvaged motors from household machines like washing machines. But certainly with the correct controller, a Brushless DC motors works with batteries. Many electric karts are powered by this type of motor.
Technical Corrections…
In the video I say “three phase DC” but It is more appropriate to call it a AC motor when referring to “phases”. At the time I was thinking in terms of the way the guy was using the alternator. He was controlling it with a Brushless DC controller.
30 kph is 18.6 mph
Someone in the comments suggested that the 3000 watts limit might be 1500 watts per outlet. That does seem like a reasonable marketing “glitch”. This is not in the manual anywhere, but If this is true, the inverter is performing as advertised.
Final Note:
PLEASE UNDERSTAND…I receive hundreds of messages on all platforms (email, Facebook, comments etc) asking for advice, and help with projects. At this volume, I simply can’t do one on one advice.

Being totally new to this, I do have a new clothes dryer motor which I ended up not needing. After finding lint out of sight jamming the back area of the spindle while trying to remove the motor, I just needed to get it clean. Now still running strong 3 years. No one's vid on youtube suggested anything other than installing a new motor, based on my search for the symptoms, so I bought one. Love what you do, my wife has joined me watching you. Excellent work.
Thank you man you explained everything well
What if I had a trans axle from an old lawn mower that has a neutral that way the motor could turn and not burn up from the large power surge at the start
Interesting! I'm thinking of a high-torque, low-speed use, and got a lot of information out of this. Thank you
is it possible to combine 2 motors on the driveshaft one high torque and one high speed and some electronics to use either or for standstill vs topend ?
OK maybe I’ll just use my 1 1/2 horsepower router motor as a wind turbine to generate power for my treehouse instead of using it as a go kart motor ?
AC motor so then can you use it in a chop saw?
In case anyone is wondering, there's no such thing as an inexpensive 3,000 watt pure sine wave inverter. If you paid $100 for yours, it'll burn up before it gets anywhere near that or the 2nd time it hits that output. Mine cost $1,800. You get what you pay for with electronics.
Three phase Hall effect 3kw motor. Or 5kw?
So damn grateful for finding your channel. Bout to learn a lot. m/
Very useful information. I have a project involving building a cart from a motor and was wondering if you could do a video on all the important information and staff somebody would need. Especially for a beginner like me.
In this video you talk about getting ahold of a used motor and repurposing it. Do you know where (in the USA) we can get new ones that don't already have an appliance attached to them?
Thank you for taking the time to make a very informative video. Nice work!
What about boat motor? How should I think, can you help
hey man, i know the video is old, but the extra start power required can be supplied by capacitors designed for it (common here for roof fan, im not north american, idk how you guys call it), and also super or ultra capacitors, in parallel with the inverter, some off grid solar panel uses this tek for start an fridge with 12v battery + super capacitor bank. i think.
Colossians 3:11-25
[11]Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.
[12]Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;
[13]Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.
[14]And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
[15]And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
[16]Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
[17]And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
[18]Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.
[19]Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.
[20]Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.
[21]Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.
[22]Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God:
[23]And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;
[24]Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.
[25]But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.
Hi Jeremy that clip you showed with the starter motor is me and it's not a car starter it's a truck
starter and it's 24V , I know you can't run them continuously but I removed the bushes and replaced
them with bearings, the only problem with the starter is that it draws 450 amps and I could only
go 2 times down the street, I had 2 x 100 AH batteries, also there was no speed controller just hit
the switch and fly, I'm from Australia
You resumes my weeks of research in one video. Good job and thanks Jeremy!
Edit: anything to update on the subject after 2 years passed?
If you're willing to do some software hacking and/or buy controller boards, the motors on hoverboards are excellent
You are so smart it inspires me to learn more stuff.
Hey Jeremy, I just wanted to say thank you. You have taught and inspired me. With some tips from you, I created an electric go kart for my daughter and we have started our own fun little channel. The whole learning process has been a blast and now we have a kart to race around our neighborhood. All the best, thanks again Jeremy!
You are wrong, washer engines can be run on dc just by making some bridges beetween the brushes and coil
Separate the Stator Coils. Apply Separate Voltage with Cap for Starting
Thank you for your videos. THIS is my kind of channel. Quick easy to understand information. Not the long and drawn out videos where they leave out critical information that makes you google for an hour or until you understand what they did.
I just bought a set of 320 watt 3800 rpm motors off of a Tuff Care 1710 9 pin. I am working on making a remote control riding mower with these. I have bought golf cart wheels and tires that I am going to put on for the drive wheels 18" diameter. Is there a way to change the gears in the gearbox to make it faster? By Chance, do you have a way to tell me the ball park speed I can expect from this set-up?
Nice job, it might be a possibility to go to a junk yard where there might be some wrecked electric cars to get good motors.
Additional to the big inverter and need to measure the Volt-Amp reading, you probably must pay attention to the 12 V battery capacity. The cold crank numbers are some sort of guidance, but they are intended for only short term. A GoKart may need high torque much longer than the battery rating seemed to suggest.
I’m interested in off grid farming and dropping my expenses to virtually nothing swapping most things to electric to run off my solar panels. Could this application work with a tractor using 5 motors. 4 wheel drive and one for PTO hydraulics.
Hi I've been watching your videos and enjoyed them all I just want to mention that I used a washing machine motor on a DC power supply without an inverter and worked perfectly fine.
I only changed the wires connections on the coils ? worth checking
actually washing machine motors (universal motors) can be connected in dc wire configuration or ac configuration, they are still expecting line voltage though
I've got a greenworks 80 volt leaf blower, and 2 chinese scooter frames. Anyone have any ideas. Also riding mower frames .
I wish you ère my next door neighbor. I would ne asking you questions all the time. Greta channel!!!
So cool seeing u on jre
Why not add a capacitor for the start current draw
Equal motor opposite connect them with a straw
Very informative video. Thanks for sharing!
Nice job!
I built an electric motorcycle…i built a freewheel that attaches to the pully on the motor…it did not hold up so i am trying to find out how fast the motor can turn while coasting without freewheel damage to the motor…it is a brushed 48volt 10 hp dc motor….not many sources know, do you?????????????
The thing is those single-phase induction washing machine motors only have 2 speeds and there not very high generally less than 2000 rpm a Preditor engine or Honda clone on the other hand has a max rpm of around 3600 rpm. They have like 0 torque too.
I'd actually like to do the opposite I'd like to put a vertical shaft honda clone on a top load washing machine and see what happens lol
Extremely informative.
