Honda Power Equipment Australia have just released the Honda HRN216VYU an it is a cracker of a mower!
Honda gave Lawnporn an opportunity to try out the new Honda HRN216VYU before releasing to the market and what a great mower it has been.
“The all-new HRN mowers offer a powerful new GCV170 engine, rugged design and are packed with features that provide an easy, comfortable mowing experience and the smooth, groomed finish lawn enthusiasts aspire to.” That’s what Honda say and we think that is spot on!!
I trialled the mower at my school project. This is 650m2 of thick kikuyu that needs a very strong mower. With the new GCV170 engine providing more power and torque than its previous engine and also being the power and torque leader in this category of mower, this mower powered through this area and made the job very neat in the results – which was easy to achieve.
The great thing to take away with this mower is ease for the user. It starts easy. It mows easy. You are always in control. A powerful motor is great but there are some other factors at play to make this a great mower.
First off a great feature is a larger fuel tank inlet making it easier to get your fuel into. This means less chance of spillage. The car is robust and makes a clicking sound when fully tight.
The mower is self propelled. Meaning the engine will power the wheels to go forward. With the smart controller at your thumbs in a nice easy to use ergonomic position, you control the self propelled feature of the mower which can range from 0 – 6.4km/h in speed. having a self propelled mower takes a lot of work in pushing the mower and you’ll end up with a finer and more consistent cut whilst not getting fatigued to have that result.
Honda’s twin blade system is also why this mower does such a great cut. Finer mulch is better mulch. With the blades hitting 2 points of the leaf blade rather than 1, long blades of mulch clipping are a thing of the past. There are a few benefits to this. First, if you are bagging, you’ll get more clippings in the bag which means less stopping to empty the generous 66L material bag. Second is if you are mulching, the clippings are finer and will decompose quicker giving your lawn back nutrients faster, more effectively and also those finer mulch clippings will be less noticeable straight after a mow.
Speaking of bagging or mulching, the adjuster lets you choose, even during the mow, how much you want to mulch or catch.
A great feature is the 2 phase blade control. Great for safety obviously but terrific for mid mow if you have stop for any reason, the blades will stop but the motor will still be going. This is great for things like removing debris mid-mow. The blade control is integrated so that it is there when it is need and stopped when it is not. No need to restart the motor after you have done what you need to do. Just engage the blades and get on with the job.
Mowing height is adjustable between 25mm – 100m so this is the perfect mower for thick kikuyu and buffalo. There are front and rear height adjusters.
The bars are solid and height adjustable as well. They fold over easily for storage.
The deck is 21″ of steel construction so you know it is solid. The motor is very fuel efficient. I gave this 650m2 area three mows and still had plenty of fuel in the 0.9L tank. Probably could get away with another 2 passes at a guess.
For 650m2 thick kikuyu, it took me at a guess 20-25 minutes. There is a few slopes and tricky bits which the self propelled feature really shined.
If you have a medium to large area of thick lawn this is the mower for you. Mowing will be a pleasure and so much a chore you would avoid.
This is a domestic mower however this would do quite well for a commercial job or a nice secondary mower with someone with a mowing round, even a primary mower for someone starting out who needs a good machine at a reasonable price.
I really loved this mower and I will be using more so expect further reviews in the future.
I gave it 9.5 out of 10. I would really like to see a secondary handle on the bag, as with a load of clippings it is quite heavy so a second pint to hold it would be awesome.
These mowers have a domestic 2 year warranty and are available at Honda Dealers.

Looks like this lawn cut was done 2 days before
does the self prepelled function still work when the blades stop? For example to help get it uphill after mowing
why do you have the wheels 2.5 front 3 back?
Bought this mower in late April. In May it was delivered to me broken. Then it was out of stock. Returned it and got the HRX model above this one for the HRN VYU price. I like the HRX so far. It's crazy fast.
I have the VKU…I might argue that the drive wheels could do with some better traction knobs.. but my yard is pretty irregular. otherwise its a great machine and my 75kg wife can start it first pull every time.
Best review of this model on Youtube.
Great vid. How many horsepower does the 170cc engine produce?
I bought one. I have cooch. It does a nice job. It will be my quick mow mower. The self propelled is great. Makes mowing easy. No dethating with it. It won't go low enough. Agree with the bag. I seem to lose clippings when I take it off to empty. It is a little heavy but I will get used to it. I will try the front higher to see if that helps. Good video thanks.
Love mowers with the roto-stop feature! I have an HRC since last season. Prior to that I had an HRM215 for 18 years, mowing every 3-5 days from March until November. I wish this HRN mower were out when I was in the market last year. Looks like a winner!
simply amazing! Did you use a bag for all that lawn? Greetings from Argentina!
Can u fold the handle down to fit in a suv?
Great editing and music montage. You’re a pro.
Nice review mate. Keen to try out one of the new HRX models as my old one was a beast!
Can't go wrong with a Honda! Great review
What's the size of the rear chute? (that's what she said) My current Honda HRU19 has a tiny rear chute which clogs when grass is damp.
Got the model below this one in December. It's easier to start than a fight in an Irish pub.
