Today we had Husqvarna come out with a demo 450x Automower. Stone Ridge Landscaping came out to give us a demo and see if the terrain would work for the Automower. Brook pointe has some very steep hills and hundreds of pine trees. The Automower mowed just fine with the hills.

Take a look and watch in the video the details we get from the mobile app and watch it climb the hills.

  1. The app doesn't actually show you a map of the cutting area. It will show a history of its path overlayed on top of the GPS location screen. In your demo, it would have shown you the top view of your property with about 6 orange lines tracing out where it had just been. The cutting area is restricted by your boundary wire rather than the GPS location. It does use the GPS to keep track of where it has mowed recently and where it hasn't visited for a while…but that data isn't visible to the user.
I have a 450X set up on 3/4 acre of grass in Hawaii…lots of rain, sticks, fruit, chickens, ruts, mud, narrow passages, odd shaped borders, uneven terrain….the mower is pretty amazing. I had to fill in a few ruts that were close enough together that both rear wheel could drop in at the same time and it would get high centered. It has a very good algorithm for trying to get un-stuck. Occasionally I have to rescue it but for the most part it will mow for days without requiring intervention. They say to keep it away from puddles so, although I let it mow when it rains, if puddles more than an inch deep start to form I tell it to park. It is also very quiet, as I'm sure you noticed during the demo. I still need to use a trimmer around some edges. The real benefit for me is that it mows beautifully even when the grass is wet.

  2. Thanks for posting this. I am looking at the 430X and 430XH in Northern Kentucky. I'm leaning toward the XH for the additional height since grass is generally thick in this region and we would never mow down to an inch tall with a regular mower. Is that why you are looking at XH model?
