If you’ve ever thought geothermal is out of your price range, I’m here to tell you that you may be surprised at how affordable it actually is. I did my own diy geothermal system for about the same price as a typical 13 to 14 SEER HVAC system, and I get double the efficiency. If you are willing to put in some work, you too can afford this option and reap the benefits of lower utility costs ongoing. A geothermal heat pump is one of the most efficient systems out there.

  1. I work for a Geothermal exclusive company in the NW Chicago area. We do the entire job start to finish. Vertical boring is what you do in a city…it is possible in most areas. 150ft/ton straight down. We bore 5" holes drop the pipe, grout with bentonite/graphite mix. Also we use methanol as an antifreeze and have protection to 15Β°F. Not possible on every city job. But many more than most people think. I am one of very few Geothermal service techs in the area as well. I cant lie. Self installed Geo systems scare me. I have seen some nightmare jobs. That being said. This is a VERY GOOD VIDEO. Informative and correct in all aspects. Great job on this sir!

  2. I am building a home on 5 acres west of Fort Worth TX. I am considering using GT and this video pushes more in that direction. I will keep investigating options but right now this seem like the way to go. Do you consider using a dehumidifier to make your own distilled water?

  3. In the real world, heat pumps are not cost effective north of the Mason – Dixon line. Ambient air temperature is so low during the winter months enough heat cannot be extracted from the ambient air to heat the home, when this happens buckup energy is supplied (either gas or electric). France is removing heat pumps for a reason.

  4. Looking to build a small cabin. 800-1000sf. Thinking of using 6-8" blackpipe as geothermal air duct and just blowing air across the outside unit of a split mini or two. Low output (9-12000 btu) split mini systems can exceed 30 seer as it is. Constant 65Β°f air blowing across coils using a fan and solar power. The other idea is to use a heat exchanger between an inside air circuit and the geothermal ducted air, then using split mini only when nessecary.

  5. When I replaced the A/C unit last spring, I asked the gentleman who installed it for me about the heat pump system and he honestly told me that he has one and that it cost him more to use because it has to run all of the time. I'm very happy that he was honest with me.

  6. Learn how to make economy on energy and live as simple as possible. Avoid the waste on every aspect of your life . It is easy and does not cost.

  7. I don't hear an awful lot of it here in southwestern Ontario Canada but a retro fit would be a good choice for me. Not rich but could manage 4ton.

  8. I thought nothing could beat a corner table with the person sitting diagonally till I saw yours. Now I am kinda jealous of your table πŸ™‚

  9. Did I miss where you actually show your system install?????????

  10. I am thinking of installing Geothermal H&C for my hunting.fishing camp. We ar 2+ miles off road, no utilities at all and we have solar for electricity and propane for appliances .We have about 2600 sq ft of cabin and it is upstate NY so it gets cold in winter and hot in summer. We have 5 acres. I think this is a good fit for our club and would like some information on how to get started. Thank you, Ray.

  11. Great explanation of heat pump technology! I put one in my house 18 years ago and cut my electric bill by about 60 plus percent and summer time hot water for free. Used my old hot water heater as tank and a new in demand hot water heater. I am absolutely thrilled with the technology! Regards

  12. I have a farm in Northwest New Jersey New Jersey. And eventually we might put geothermal heat in . we have a outdoor central boiler For heat and an oil burn or 2 cleor 2. We have an ample amount of firewood. Like many Cords of Firewood. But as I get older it gets harder and harder to throw the logs in the boiler we have really good equipment for doing the firewood thank God God. But still a lot of work. AGO thermal might be the answer thank you for your info info was a good nice video good job thank you sir And have a wonderful day.πŸ˜ŽπŸ‘πŸ˜πŸ˜ŽπŸ˜πŸ˜ŽπŸ‘β€Όβ€Ό

  13. Random thought watching this randomly recommend video could I use this to cool my house and heat my pool?

  14. With a 10-foot trench why not lay the pipes vertically in 6 ft coils that still would have put your line below 4 feet and you would have got more bang-for-your-buck trench wise.

  15. I have SEER 18 and I have had it for over 20 years the man that installed it said I have the only two units in the entire county

  16. I have a giant cistern well right next to my house.. how can I use this for geothermal

  17. If you are filling jugs at the grocery store, just by yourself a $200 home reverse osmosis system since the grocery store is probably just reverse osmosis. It will save you money and you end up with a home water filter that can remove toxins such as farm chemicals.

  18. They are $10k-16k for 3 ton in reality you would only need a heat exchanger with blower and thermostat AC and heat. Self build it the attic is also a great place to get heat once the sun comes up or a green house to gather heat for the home in winter with no snow. Dear God we have done without electricity for all but 100 years perhaps the old ways were better?

  19. I'm just now getting into GT heat… I will be building my house the spring of 2022. I'm in Southwest Missouri and need to start collecting info for my area.

  20. Hey mate, you probably won't see this but I'm curious if you have variable speed (inverter) compressors in the US, much more efficient than multiple staged comps.
I'm a hvac tech in Australia, 15 years on the job, on all kinds pages and groups from around the world and for what ever reason, the USA seems to have almost nothing but old conventional single speed technology.

  21. Extremely well done presentation. I'm not the sharpest tool in the tech shed yet even I could easily follow along how your system works & why you chose it. If you weren't/aren't a teacher, you missed your calling. (Well, one of your callings, at least.)

  22. Thank you for the video.
I am presently planning a new build and geothermal is at the top of my list along with solar and wind.

  23. I am Magine if you connected it to solar as well for the electric portion it might even drive the cost further down? Off setting the cost of the solar

  24. Time stands still in your video…. or you need to replace the battery in your wall clock πŸ™‚

  25. Thanks, very detailed. I saw a larger scale district heating scheme using ground source heat that was done in Canada (can't find the link but it was a new-built community of several houses). They used the pipes in the summer to dump heat from roof top solar collectors into the ground to store for collection in winter and I believe it could run for quite long periods without even needing the heat pumps. I suppose similar effect is negligible in smaller systems like yours but I wonder if any of the Summer cooling heat you shed remains to be harvested in the winter. My only question is about the 'ton' terminology, I'm not sure what that means other than as some measure of output? Thanks again, really enjoyed the video.

  26. It it worth investing in a geothermal system in warm climates such as Los Angeles?

  27. A 10 ft unsupported wall, in any soil is a death trap, especially if water intrudes into the ditch. A ditch can collapse at a speed greater than a person can escape. Yes, the type of soil makes a big difference, but a 10 ft deep ditch violates all the rules. Just down the road from me, a guy died in a 3 ft deep ditch. He was on his knees, with his head down connecting the pipe. The ditch collapsed and he suffocated to death before they could dig him out. Otherwise, I enjoyed your video.

  28. I want to do this on a ranch near Conifer Colorado. I’m in the beginning planning stage so I don’t even know how close the frontline is to bedrock and how that would impact an install.

  29. That is what i wish to have geothermal ran thru radiant heat floor, may put water boiler in line for winter but for summer 50 degree shell be good cooling of concrete pad. I need to get some good book to calculate it all properly, want to do home of 65×35 single floor and shop of 50×25. My goal is to eliminate any duct type system in new home and bankers too. Lol

  30. An electro-magnetic coil wrapped around your water line has a tendency to break up the hardwater effects of calcium and you get a lot less buildup in yout equipment…

  31. So if you get solar and have geothermal you could technically not pay for electricity for a very long time.
