I’ve been topping off a leaky tire for weeks and staring at my garden hose wondering if I could use it instead of my compressor. The answer is YES!!!

The goal of course was to make a video demonstrating a clever use of physics to solve a common problem in a creative way. In no way do I actually recommend this as a practical solution! At some point I will create a video explaining the calculations and post it on my 2nd channel, BUILD2. When I do I’ll put the link here.

Please consider helping fund the channel by becoming part of my “Quint-essential” support on Patreon:

I only do per-creation subscriptions and recommend setting a monthly limit in case I upload more than once in a month (which will be rare). I want to have the option of taking a month off and not keep taking your money just because another month has passed!

Thanks for watching…

  1. love these video's, come on folks, share these on facebook and other places, lets get Quint known all over the internet.

  2. You Maybe should have filled your tyre right with water !!!! No ???? It would have been faster …???
    Richard Lionheart ????

  3. This is not a compressor rather a converter which converts the pressure in the water pipe to air pressure. This can not generate any pressure.

  4. I mean, I get the "because we can" – part, but if it's neither fast nor exact nor practical nor economic…
Why would you do it this way?
Also, there's moving parts for sure: bottle caps and the person working full time to operate the thing have more mileage than the tires will get

  5. He has a problem is the water from your garden is pressurized by a compressor at the water company so you’re still using a compressor one way or the other you tight wad you can buy a small compressor for filling tires and it’s a lot less hassle

  6. Love the science experiment and simplifying displacement and pressure!!! Would be great to do a follow up to discuss, why this isn't used more (e.g. resource wasting and efficiency reasons 🙂 but overall awesome science lesson 🙂

  7. what if you had top and bottom; to flip over; to let water drain into bottom row of bottle;air will escape to top side and escaping air will spin impeller;

if there was four sided; and 8 sided; liken to paddle wheel;and stack it; say 12; and turn like pivot irrigation; in farming; let one fill after another even; the amount of air escaping from each turn will be more than amount need to turn pivot; thus we will have electric generator with net plus; how about that? is that a patent able idea?

  9. Bonjour a tous du Canada Dont use baloon use condom (i'm serious) condom are more
capacity and are stonger then any baloon just use new one used one are not a good idea OKKKKKKKKay

  10. I'm reminded of the arc-reactor scene in IronMan 1 when Tony and Obadia are talking.

This works as a science project but, otherwise, it's completely impractical when you can just get extra hose for your compressor or an emergency roadside compressor at much less hassle.

  11. The only uncool thing about this video was thr acronym at the end. You have a bright future making science videos for elementary schoolers in the 1990s.

  12. No wonder California water reservoir are so empty. SMH. Hey be a good devices when the world have no laws. Survival of the fittest.

  13. Just take a 55gallon drum, run the hose into the bottom and the air hose out the top. Much faster.

  14. I've got idea that will blow your mind, get the leak fixed

  15. This method injects too much moister into the tires. This is not good. Moister in the tires causes the pressure to vary too much with temperature. Do not do this.

  16. Fun fact – this is how old school saw mills and mines ran air compression. using a river and a compression station to supply compressed air

  17. I just bought a Walmart Hyper Tough portable compressor for $16.08. Works great.

  18. 4 rounds… So in other words water has 4x of atmosphere for the same value/mass of air.
    That right?

  19. Nice concept but its much cheaper and much less stressful on the municipal water systems pumps to just buy a compressor or get one free or cheap. Yes there is pressure in the water system. Thats how it can be possible to deliver it properly to your home. If everybody did this wed have zero water pressure and ill tell you one thing. You do NOT want to meet me without a shower.

Nice vid though of what you CAN do.

  20. I think you should show more of your design and building processes. It will add some more volume and substance to your videos. Thanks for sharing!

  21. You should revisit this but use the method (can remember the name) where you have 4 pipes, one super long, 2 half sized and a large one to link all 3 like a fork. Seal up the middle and place a pressure valve. Place a bunch of straws halfway down the long one and then attach a source of water.
The water goes down the long pipe, picks up bubbles, hits the bend and flows down the pipe to the outlet. Dropping off the bubbles in the middle chamber, causing it to pressurize.

  22. In theory, would work great…
    I would never do this.
There's a reason that pneumatic systems utilize air dryers. And air tanks with your compressors have drain valves on the bottom.

    The issue with this…
As it may not be much,
    Moisture causes oxidation.
And, if you don't shut the valve off
in time, water will effect the tires
    Balance & performance.
Then you'll have to go to a tire shop to get them to pull the tires off the rims to dry them up.

  23. Wow! That was fantastic. Interesting content and great presentation.

  24. I would absolutely love to see an automated version of it so you don't have to reset it ?
